BIRMINGHAM – Sea Life – Breed, Rescue, Protect – Octopus

There are around 300 species of octopus and we find them in every ocean on our planet, but the common octopus is native to the UK!
Octopus are molluscs which means they are from the same family as Slugs and Snails as well as Cuttlefish and Squid. They are well known for being very clever. In fact they are one of the most intelligent invertebrate species.
They can also change the colour of their skin to camouflage perfectly with their surroundings, helping them to sneak up on prey as well as hide from predators. They live in shallow waters and make their homes on the sea floor, but this leaves them threatened by certain types of fishing methods such as trawler nets which drag along the ocean bed.
The coin is available at National Sea Life Centre Birmingham
