Kozel Castle

The name of the castle, ‘Billy Goat’, comes from the ancient pagan custom of the Slavs to offer a billy goat to their pagan gods in the hope of a good harvest in this place in the equinox period. The castle is a classicist hunting lodge built as a seasonal estate for noble hunters at the end of 18th century for Jan Vojtìch Èernín. The four-wing single-storey house encircling the rectangular inside yard was complemented with two pairs of buildings of the chapel and the riding school and the footmen´s room and the stables to form a single complex surrounded with 30 ha of partly natural and partly landscaped park. The castle offers a display of the preserved original furnishing, showing how hunting lodges and summer houses of the nobility of late 18th and early 19th centuries looked like.
