Konopištì Castle

Konopištì Castle used to be a Gothic fortress imitating French churches dating from late 13th century. It was probably founded by Bishop Tobias of Benešov. The first interference with the mediaeval structure of the castle dates from late 15th century and is linked with the name of Jiøí of Štenberk, and the second dates from early 17th century and its initiator was Hodìjovský Family of Hodìjov. Konopištì was transformed into a Baroque residence in 18th century by the Vrtba Family of Vrtba. Archduke Franz Ferdinand d´Este, who purchased the castle in 1887 from the Lobkowitz Family, had Konopištì reconstructed to a magnificent seat of the future emperor. The castle rooms were equipped with museum collections coming from the heritage of Franz Ferdinand obtained after the death of the Duke of Modena.
