Esch-sur-Sûre is a small town in north-western Luxembourg. It is part of the canton of Wiltz, which is part of the district of Diekirch. The commune is the second smallest in area in Luxembourg.At the meandering river Sûre lies the village Esch-sur-Sûre. It grew around a castle built in 927. The castle was constructed to offer protection against marauding troops of Hungarians. The castle consists of two towers. The lower, rectangular keep from the 10th century and the restaurated romanesque castle chapel belong to the main castle which was expanded in the 13th century with a bailey and circular walls. The upper projecting ‘Lochturm’ – watchtower, was only added in the 16th century. It’s on a nearby hill and can only be reached through the lower lying village.
