Cafe Slavia

Cafe Slavia is situated on the ground floor of the Lazanský Palace that stands at the corner of today Národní tøída and Smetana Square. It is one of the last palace buildings. As early as in 1881 a Prague tradesman Václav Zoufalý opened a coffee bar in the premises. He created a new entrance to the large coffee bar rooms and named the bar Velká Slavie. At the beginning of the 20h century a designer Jan E. Deport carried out a new coffee bar portal in Art Noveau style. The most extensive modifications were carried out within the reconstruction by Josef Hukal in 30`s when – beside other thing – big glass windows were installed. In 1983 a general reconstruction was carried out (architects Jan Fišer and Ivo Los). The famous cafe Slavia reached an extraordinary reputation due to famous personalities, mostly the actors from the nearby National Theatre, who frequent the bar.
