BRNO – Špilberk Castle

One of the main dominants of the skyline of the city of Brno is represented by the Špilberk Castle, built in the period 1234-1277 as the residence of the local rulers. The castle was used for defence purposes for several times in the history of the city – in 1645 against the Swedes and in 1742 against the Prussians. The purpose of the castle changed in the course of time. The original fortress and seat of Moravian Margraves was later turned into the heaviest prison of the Austrian Monarchy and yet later into the present Museum of the City of Brno. The underground casemates with the torture chamber, the rack and numerous cells where famous figures were held prisoners, such as the Babinský highwayman, form an integral part of the castle. In 1962 Špilberk was announced National Cultural Monument.
