Lithuanian King Mindaugas (1200-1263). Mindaugas used a variety of ways to strengthen and establish his power –murdering or banishing his stronger rivals, turning peaceful or weaker dukes into vassals and using family ties to gain more influence. The main reason for his success was the harmonious implementation of all these methods. This led to the emergence of the Lithuanian state. Seeking to rise above the others and force them to obey his command, Mindaugas joined Lithuanians together and established a single state. The first stage of the development of the Lithuanian state was completed by 1250.Mindaugas’s baptism in 1251 was the consequence of both historical circumstances and a political decision. Lithuania was not yet ready for Christianization. However, this decision became an important political act. The Pope acknowledged Mindaugas as his vassal, gave orders for Mindaugas’s coronation and resolved to establish the Lithuanian diocese. It was a great diplomatic victory, achieved through a shrewd political move. Coin is available in the National Museum of Lithuania.
